Do you have dental anxiety?

Does the thought of being in the dentist’s chair make you shudder? Would you rather power through a toothache or sensitive teeth than step foot inside a dental clinic? You shouldn’t feel this tense and anxious about going to the dentist. If you believe you have dental anxiety, dental sedation may be a great option for you!

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a gentle and effective way to deal with dental anxiety by administering a drug or gas before or during a dental procedure. The most common options for sedation dentistry are:

  • Oral sedatives: This is the most common dental sedation procedure performed at Horton Park Dental. It is effective at calming even the most severe dental phobias and is suitable for nearly all of our adult patients. It involves administering oral sedatives such as diazepam, about an hour before your appointment. You’re fully awake but less anxious about your procedure.
  • Nitrous oxide: Commonly known as “Laughing Gas”, this type of sedation is administered by inhaling nitrous oxide, a gas that relaxes you during the procedure. Our Horton Park Dentists will regulate the amount of nitrous oxide you receive during the procedure and ensure you stay calm during the procedure.
  • IV Sedation: This form of sedation puts you into a deep sleep until the sedation wears off. This can be administered through an IV in the dental office. IV sedation is not as common as oral sedation and Nitrous oxide and is done by few dental offices.

Am I a good candidate for dental sedation?

It depends! When discussing the best course of treatment, our dentists will ask you a few questions which may include, details of underlying conditions, your age, allergies, lifestyle, etc. to determine if you are a good candidate for dental sedation.

Our top priority is creating a relaxing environment and sedation options that will help you feel calm during your sedation procedure.
